Dartmouth High Grade 9 Physical Education Outline 2017-2018
Physical education focuses on the concept of Physical Literacy (“Individuals who are physically literate move with competence and confidence in a wide variety of physical activities in multiple environments that benefit they healthy development of the whole person” – Physical and Health Education Canada). The aim of this physical education program is to provide various opportunities for students to engage in many different types of physical activities throughout the year (and hopefully beyond the course for lifelong healthy living).
The curriculum is divided into three categories (strands):
*Active for Life : Health related physical fitness; SMART goals; safety; motivation; connections to life outside of physical education class
*Skills and Movement Concepts : Movements and skills for students to become skillful movers in many different environments (dance, educational gymnastics, games, and individual pursuits)
*Life Skills : Respect and affect when participating in the various activities throughout the year
All strands work together!
Assessment
The purpose of assessment is to support learning and communicate student achievement. A variety of assessment methods will be used in class. This is a movement class, therefore purposeful participation is the main focal point for success in this course. Components of each strand will be explored through various types of activities.
Formative assessment - ongoing throughout the class (observations, class conversations), helpful for continued learning
Summative assessment - usually occurs at the completion of a topic/unit, used to determine competence in performing movement and skill concepts and /or understanding strategies
Rubrics - a scale of criteria (various areas where this can be useful – participation; strategy understanding; movement concepts)
Observation -occurs daily by teacher. Often used with formative assessment. Encouraging and observing purposeful participation in each activity.
Evaluation:
Assessment and evaluation will take place every class in connection with the outcomes.
4 – Demonstration of applying or extending understanding of the outcomes.
3 – Demonstration of competent understanding of the outcomes.
2 – Demonstration of developing an understanding of the outcomes.
1 – Demonstration of limited understanding of the outcomes.
Participation
*Each student is expected to participate and try their best each lesson. However, there may be situations where a student may need to be excused from participating in class. A note from a parent/guardian received prior to class starting (either through email or a written note) will excuse the student from participating that lesson.
*Each student should bring appropriate clothing to participate in physical education class (sneakers, shorts, t-shirts, sweatpants…). Time will be given at the start and at the end of class for students to change and arrive to their next class on time.
Communication
*Powerschool will be updated on a regular basis for each topic/unit.
*SMART goals will be used throughout the course during physical education class as well as outside of the school setting
*I can be reached through email: [email protected]
*Information can also be found on my website: [email protected]
*If you have any concerns or questions, please contact me as soon as possible so we can work together to ensure a successful year in physical education
Have a great year!
